Formal vs informal German introductions: What’s the difference?
Understanding the difference between formal and informal speech is crucial when practicing your
introduction in German. German distinguishes clearly between “du” (informal "you") and “Sie” (formal "you"), and this influences how introductions are phrased depending on context.
In informal situations (with friends, peers, or younger people), you might say:
Hallo, ich bin Anna. Und du? – Hi, I’m Anna. And you?
Freut mich, dich kennenzulernen. – Nice to meet you.
In formal contexts (such as business meetings, official interviews, or when addressing older individuals), the structure is more respectful:
Guten Tag, mein Name ist Herr Müller. Wie heißen Sie? – Good day, my name is Mr. Müller. What is your name?
Schön, Sie kennenzulernen. – Pleased to meet you.
Being able to adapt your introduction in German based on formality not only reflects good language skills but also shows cultural awareness and respect.
